The Best Fried Chicken in the Inner West

Fried chicken is a universally revered meal that cannot be outdone. The combination of golden, crispy skin with a soft and moist inside makes for a phenomenal tasting experience, whether it’s served as a burger or on its own. With some tasty sides and a cold drink, it’s the ultimate meal for any mood or weather! Outside the CBD is a treasure trove for places that serve the delight, so here are our top picks for the best fried chicken in the Inner West.

HARTSYARD (Newtown)

As much as eating is about refuelling your body, it has also always been a social experience for people to build relationships over. At Hartsyard, a large variety of meals are served in large portions to be shared with a group of friends. Their fried chicken with sausage gravy and buttermilk biscuits (a savoury scone for us Australians!) is perfect to share with a side of drinks on a Friday night out.

Location: 33 Enmore Road, Newtown NSW 2042

BLOODWOOD (Newtown)

If you like your fried chicken a little fancier, then Bloodwood is a great choice to try the tasty delight. With a simplistic, bare-bones interior, you’ll know you’re in one of Newtown’s food highlights before you even try the food. The succulent and moist fried chicken is served with with iceberg lettuce and fermented cashews, complemented with a spicy dukkah for an exciting Middle Eastern take on the Southern classic.

THE HENSON (Marrickville)

By the old, grand exterior of The Henson in Marrickville, you’d think that it’s just another ordinary Australian pub with local beers and vintage pub fare. However, The Henson places a large focus on community and sustainability to create a thriving and exciting hub for all Inner West locals. A wide and varied menu is on offer here, but as far as fried chicken goes, our choice is the fried chicken tacos with radish, avocado and tomatillo salsa!

Location: 91 Illawarra Road, Marrickville NSW 2204

MARY’S (Newtown)

It’s  impossible not to think of Mary’s as one of, if not, the best place for fried chicken in the Inner West. Nestled away down a side alley of King Street, this covert eatery has gained immense popularity through word of mouth advertising. It’s grungy and dim interior adds to the unparalleled ambience of the bar, and the incredible fried chicken and burgers making this place a Newtown highlight. The whole fried chicken with mash and gravy is any foodie’s dream!

ROASTVILLE (Marrickville)

If you like your fried chicken with a twist, then you definitely have to check out what the team at Roastville have done with the classic dish. Blending classic fried chicken with the unexpected spiciness of kimchi waffles, it’s a flavourful clash of the old South and the eccentric culture of Korea. Also served with the meal is a mix of kewpie mayonnaise, sriacha sauce and parmesan cheese. Grab one of their signature coffees alongside your meal for a delicious and memorable dining experience.

THE BALD FACED STAG (Leichardt)

With regular music acts frequenting this Leichardt destination, The Bald Faced Stag is a great place for a night out and to sample some truly exquisite food.  With musical acts on most nights of the week, grab a drink and listen to some local tunes with your fried chicken. Our recommendation is the buttermilk fried chicken burger with red cabbage slaw, chipotle aioli, cheese and house pickles, with a plate of wings on the side!

CLEM’S CHICKEN SHOP (Newtown)

Clem’s has solidified itself as one of the most popular late-night haunts for some satisfying fare after trawling along King Street on a Newtown weekend, and for good reason. Perfectly cooked and seasoned with a side of fries, it’s the best way to finish the night off. Its chicken is legendary amongst residents of the Inner West, and no doubt lives up to the hype, provided that it’s one of their most popular choices. Don’t miss this one!
